Drafts

Write research drafts with inline citations from your sources.

Drafts are a writing tool built into each project. Write directly in Kognific with access to your sources and AI assistance, and cite as you go.

Drafts require a Plus plan. AI-assisted writing (AI Write) requires a Pro plan.

Creating a draft

Open a project and switch to the Drafts tab. Click New Draft, enter a title, and start writing.

AI Write

Click AI Write from the slash command menu or the editor toolbar to open the AI writing panel. This lets you generate content from your project's sources with inline citations.

  1. 1

    Write a prompt

Describe what you want to write (e.g., "Compare the methodologies used in sources 1 and 3").

  2. 2

    Select sources

Choose which project sources to draw from. Only sources that have finished processing are available.

  3. 3

    Click Generate

The AI generates content with numbered citations referencing your selected sources.

  4. 4

    Review and insert

Preview the generated text. Click Insert into Draft to add it to your document, or go Back to adjust your prompt and regenerate.

Editor sidebar

On desktop, a sidebar on the right has two tabs:

  • Outline - a table of contents generated from your headings (H1-H3). Click any heading to scroll to it.
  • Sources - a list of all sources cited in your draft. Click any source to navigate to it.

Exporting

Click the three-dot menu (···) in the draft header to export your work:

  • Markdown (.md)
  • Word (.docx)
  • LaTeX (.tex)
  • BibTeX (.bib) - available when your draft cites at least one source
  • Print / PDF - opens the browser print dialog

Citations are formatted according to the citation style you set on the project.

Deleting a draft

Click the three-dot menu (···) in the draft header and select Delete. You'll be asked to confirm. This cannot be undone.
