Synthesis
Generate AI analysis across multiple sources in a project.
Synthesis documents let you generate structured AI analysis that draws from multiple sources in a project. Instead of asking one-off questions, a synthesis produces a complete document with inline citations.
Synthesis generation requires a Pro plan.
Creating a synthesis
- 1
Open a project
Go to a project and switch to the Synthesis tab.
- 2
Click New Synthesis
The synthesis creation dialog opens.
- 3
Enter a title
Give the synthesis a descriptive name (e.g., "Methodology Comparison for Chapter 2").
- 4
Choose a type
Select the kind of analysis you want:
- Thematic Analysis - identify common themes across your sources
- Literature Review - generate a structured literature review
- Gap Analysis - find gaps and missing areas in the existing research
- Methodology Comparison - compare the research methods used across sources
- Argument Map - map out the key arguments and positions
- 5
Add a custom prompt (optional)
Write specific instructions to guide the analysis. For example, "Focus on qualitative methods only" or "Compare findings related to patient outcomes."
- 6
Select sources
Choose which project sources to include. You can search by title or author. Only sources that have finished processing are available for selection.
- 7
Click Generate
The synthesis is created and generation begins. This may take up to a minute depending on the number and size of sources.
Viewing a synthesis
Click any synthesis in the list to open it. The synthesis page shows:
- Header - the title, synthesis type badge, and your custom prompt (if provided)
- Content - the full generated text with numbered citations [1], [2], [3]
- Sources sidebar (desktop) - a list of all sources used, each with a numbered badge matching the inline citations
Click any numbered citation in the text to highlight the corresponding source in the sidebar. Click a source in the sidebar to navigate to it.
Processing states
- Generating - a loading spinner appears while the synthesis is being generated, with a note that it may take up to a minute
- Complete - the full text and citations are displayed
- Failed - an error message appears with a Regenerate button
Regenerating a synthesis
If you want a fresh version, click the three-dot menu (···) in the synthesis header and select Regenerate. This replaces the existing content with a new generation using the same settings and sources.
Deleting a synthesis
Click the three-dot menu (···) in the synthesis header and select Delete. You'll be asked to confirm. This cannot be undone.
