Kognific

Citations

Generate formatted citations from your source metadata.

Kognific generates formatted citations for your sources based on the metadata you provide (title, authors, year, DOI, journal, etc.).

Viewing a citation

Open any source and go to the Details tab. The Citation section shows a formatted citation. Click the copy button to copy it to your clipboard.

Citation styles

Six citation styles are available:

  • APA 7th (default, available on all plans)
  • MLA 9th
  • Chicago
  • IEEE
  • Harvard
  • Vancouver

Use the dropdown in the Citation section to switch between styles.

Styles beyond APA 7th require a Plus plan or higher.

BibTeX

A BibTeX toggle appears below the formatted citation. Click it to view the BibTeX entry, then copy it for use in LaTeX or reference managers.

Default citation style

Set your preferred default citation style in Settings > Preferences > Editor > Default citation style. This style is used when creating new projects.

Per-project citation styles

Each project has its own citation style, which you set when creating the project. This style is used for:

  • Formatted citations when viewing sources within that project
  • Citation formatting in draft exports (Markdown, Word, LaTeX, BibTeX)

To change a project's citation style, edit the project settings.

Improving citation quality

The more metadata you provide, the better the formatted citation. Make sure to fill in:

  • Authors (comma-separated, e.g., "Smith, J., Doe, A.")
  • Year
  • DOI (shown as a clickable link in the Details tab)
  • Journal, Volume, Issue, Pages (available in the source's editable fields)

Missing fields are omitted from the citation rather than showing placeholders.
